How does Fiat make their 4-cylinders sound soooo damn good?!? What’s their legitimate secret? Not some pasta or ravioli in the exhaust or anything like that. Seriously, how do they do it? Why can’t all modern 4-cylinders sound like this??

HOW??!!??

Sounds too manufactured

They spent more development money on the sound than the reliability.

It sounds broken.

Though let's be real it probably is.

Header length, pipe length vs. diameter, resonators, mufflers, etc. Just gotta get the right combination of things.

Ever hear a WRX with an equal length header vs. the stock exhaust manifold? Sounds like a completely different car.

Because it literally has no muffler (on the 500 at least).

It’s this simple: Resonator and no muffler. A resonator deepens the sound and when there’s no muffler yo here more of it. Any I4 with this setup will sound similar.

on the 500 abarth it’s turbo, resonator, dump out the back a couple inches later. No muffler. And I can tell you I’m proud to wake my neighbors with it daily.

Most 4 cylinder cars are built for economy and comfort, as are most cars in general, and noise reduction is part of that. With no resonator or muffler, that purpose is voided, at least some of the comfort aspect, that part being the noise level. This is why I remove the resonator on most of my cars. Noooiiise please.

Actually, FIAT’s 1.4L Multiair is pretty well-regarded in terms of reliability AFAIK. It’s moreso their interior quality / entertainment systems that seem to get the most flack, at least here in North America from what I’ve heard.

No mufflers. And a good design from the factory. See this Fiesta with a muffler delete as an example:

Well that is quite rorty.

Which just reinforces my opinion that the 124 Abarth is by far the best Miata you can buy.

I’m guessing Fiat undid all the sound engineering to restore some of the dirty old-car sounds that other companies have eliminated.

Lacking an actual muffler is a big part of it, although to be honest the 4-pipe exit is overkill. Let’s be real, it’s a 1.4L turbo four, not a V12.

That janky white tape tho, so Fiat.
